‘Les Tours’ is an art installation developed during an artist residency in Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg), focused on the image and meanings that derive from the steel industrial heritage. Many of the effects that occurred in the early twentieth century with the great economic boom of mining, are reproduced today again with economic development plans based on real estate construction.Those former peripheral industrial spaces are now the labor and economic engine of the region. The proposal presents a recreation of these towers, as a symbol of the community in the work environment, which links present and past, reflecting on the memory and identity of the place. At the social level, a new wave of migration has arrived to meet the needs arising from construction. Groups of workers, coordinated and equipped with a common corporate image, reflect a new identity of the place on a daily basis. At the landscape level, cranes have become a new visual motif. Its verticality contrasts with the longitudinality of the old railways. Both metallic elements form linked geometries and collaborating structures, which, when decontextualized, can easily become sculptural and infinite.
‘Les Tours’ és una instal·lació artística desenvolupada durant una residència d’artista a Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxemburg), centrada en la imatge i els significats que es deriven del patrimoni industrial siderúrgic. Molts dels efectes que es van produir a principis del segle XX amb el gran auge econòmic de la mineria, es reprodueixen avui de nou amb plans de desenvolupament econòmic basats en la construcció immobiliària. Aquells antics espais industrials perifèrics són ara el motor laboral i econòmic de la regió. La proposta presenta una recreació d’aquestes torres, com a símbol de la col·lectivitat en l’entorn laboral, que lliga present i passat, tot reflexionant sobre la memòria i la identitat del lloc. A nivell social, ha arribat una nova onada migratòria per atendre les necessitats derivades de la construcció. Grups de treballadors, coordinats i equipats amb una imatge corporativa comuna, reflecteixen cada dia una nova identitat del lloc. A nivell paisatgístic, les grues s’han convertit en un nou motiu visual. La seva verticalitat contrasta amb la longitudinalitat dels antics ferrocarrils. Ambdós elements metàl·lics formen geometries enllaçades i estructures col·laboradores que, descontextualitzades, poden esdevenir fàcilment escultòriques i infinites.
